We had an excellent time at Molumong and during the pony trekking period. It was cold but lekker!! The lodge was clean, well equipped for our needs and the service good. John was our guide and he is a fine guy. ....think he thought us to be a crazy lot. Five-Five, the deaf guy went out of his way to help us – always with a big smile. We already have highly recommended and have sent info about the trail and the lodge to our friends and family.
Regarding the directions, if one enters from the Free State – I recommend the route via Katze Dam and not the one from Caledon’s Poort via Oxbow to Molumong. The Oxbow road is too pot hole’y’ ... for 50 km or more. It takes at least 4 – 5 hours for +/-180 km from the Free State border posts to Molumong.... and diesel is not freely available up in the mountains. I did not fill up the tank in Fouriesburg (as I should have done) and we only found diesel in Pitseng on the way back – the last few km’s before Pitseng the car ran on prayer only – literally.
A small story: I was totally terrified to ride on horseback before we did the trail. When I was 4 years old my brother’s horse threw me and ever since I had this psychological fear for horse riding. When Jacob asked me if I could ride, I gave him a definite NO and they gave me, what they called a soft horse, Sebastiaan. Well Sebastiaan was wonderful and it was a great victory for me when I realized that I’m able to control Sebastiaan and make him stop, turn and run at my will. I overcame my fear J John is a very unassuming and wonderful instructor and he went out of his way to make sure we were happy.
